VT6530
FAQS
Pathway applications are fully supported.
The VT6530 server makes the VT terminal "look" just like a 6530 terminal. Application changes are never required.
Yes the product has been used as a replacement of, alternative to, or upgrade of the 3886 AWAN by Tandem.
They can transparently access 6530 block or conversational mode applications equally well since the fact that they are connected to a terminal server is transparent to the VT6530 software.
The product supports XTERM users since XTERM is really a VT terminal emulation.
Yes, they can "hot switch" between applications using the same terminal or emulator for all applications. In the case of actual terminals, the application should support a screen refresh function for maximum convenience.
Absolutely. When desiring to access Tandem resident 6530 applications, the user would simply TELNET to the Tandem host. The VT6530 server would accept this new connection and perform the 6530 emulation on the VT terminal or emulator. The fact that the UNIX system acts as an intermediary is entirely transparent to the VT6530 server and the 6530 application.
Dial in users can be accommodated via TCP/IP terminal servers equipped with modems. The terminal server would provide the capability of encapsulating the terminal traffic into TCP/IP TELNET packets. Again, this would be entirely transparent to the VT6530 server and to the 6530 application.
Unfortunately, VT terminals have only 24 physical lines while the 6530 has a 25th line which may optionally be used for advisory messages by the application. The VT6530 product will optionally display 6530 25th line advisory messages on the physical VT 24th line.
Each site and user may control whether or not this is automatically performed since the use of line 25 is very much application dependent.
A start-up parameter supplied to the server indicates if it should automatically display line 25 advisories on VT line 24. In addition, each individual user may toggle his session into or out of this mode, assuring that the behavior of the VT6530 server can be easily adapted to each application.
All 6530 function keys are mapped to either VT function keys or key strokes.
When using a VT terminal emulator, the specific emulator may provide key mapping capabilities so the physical keyboard can be easily mapped to duplicate a 6530 keyboard.
They are fully supported by the VT6530 server.
When in conversational mode, users may page up or down through the session just like they can with a 6530 terminal.
When in block mode, preloaded 6530 pages are maintained for each terminal user.
Features of the 6530 terminal such as blinking fields, protected and unprotected fields, graphic character support, etc. are supported.
The first answer is cost related. A single software license for VT6530 can support an unlimited number of terminal users eliminating the need to license costly terminal emulators for each workstation. VT emulators are commonly included with most workstation TCP/IP products and may be used with VT6530 without additional cost per workstation.
The second answer is usage related. VT6530 permits users to employ a single terminal emulator for both Tandem 6530 applications as well as VT applications running on other host systems. There is no need for users to install additional software on their workstations, no need for users to learn additional software, or for administrators to support additional workstation software.
